A UC Davis student lost their life Monday in what Sacramento County coroner’s officials have ruled a suicide. The student was identified as Dylan Ian Stopinski, 20.
Campus spokesman Andy Fell said police received a report of someone jumping from the parking structure on Kleiber Hall Drive, near the UCD fire and police departments, at about 11:40 a.m.
Stopinski was transported to the UC Davis Medical Center and succumbed to their injuries shortly thereafter.
Fell said Stopinski attended Buchanan High School in Clovis and entered UCD in September 2022, pursuing a double major in history and English.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves across the university community, leaving friends, faculty, and fellow students mourning the loss of a promising young scholar.
Stopinski was described by friends as a passionate and intellectually curious individual, known for their love of literature and keen interest in historical studies.
Stopinski's professors also remembered them as a dedicated and insightful student, deeply engaged in their academic pursuits.
The news of Stopinski's passing has prompted discussions about mental health support services on campus and the importance of reaching out for help when struggling with emotional distress.
UC Davis offers a range of resources for students dealing with mental health challenges, including counseling services, peer support groups, and crisis intervention programs.
In the wake of Stopinski's death, the university community has come together to support one another and to honor the memory of a beloved student.
