A Salt Lake man convicted of raping an 18-year-old woman at gunpoint in 2012 is now seeking parole from prison.
Brian Newton, 34, spoke on his own behalf during Tuesday's parole hearing at the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison. However, his victim, Mckenzie Fronk, who took her own life in September 2020, was unable to speak.
Fronk's suicide was directly linked to the trauma inflicted by Newton, according to attorney Joseph Hill. Her emotional wounds from the assault never fully healed.
The incident occurred on May 30, 2012, when Fronk attended a house party in West Valley City with her friends. Newton, also present at the party, asked her to go get food with him.
Newton was charged with four felony crimes and in 2014 was convicted of aggravated sexual assault and aggravated assault. He was sentenced to 10 years to life in the Utah State Prison. The lead prosecutor in the case was Joseph Hill, who worked for the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office at the time.
Newton's conviction was upheld by the Utah Supreme Court after he appealed. During Tuesday's parole hearing, Newton faced a representative from the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole for his first hearing. Hill spoke on behalf of Fronk's family, who asked him to address the board.
