A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday as a Brunswick doctor, Dr. Marsha Certain, was fatally shot at her property in Wayne County by her boyfriend, who then took his own life, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
The authorities were alerted around 7 p.m. to the situation at Marsha Certain's property on Buffalo Road in Hortense, near the Glynn County line. Wayne County Chief Deputy Mike Hargrove stated that a family member of Certain’s boyfriend informed deputies that he was threatening suicide.
The family member relayed that Certain’s boyfriend, whose identity was not disclosed pending family notification, confessed to them over the phone about killing Certain and his intentions to end his own life.
Deputies, present for about 30 minutes, were attempting to persuade the boyfriend, Tracey Sanna, to leave the house peacefully when he briefly emerged before returning inside. Moments later, a gunshot was heard.
Upon entering the house, deputies discovered the bodies of Certain and her boyfriend, both succumbed to gunshot wounds.
Dr. Marsha Certain was a respected cardiologist specializing in interventional cardiology at Southeast Georgia Physician Associates-Cardiology. With over 43 years of experience, she was affiliated with the Southeast Georgia Health System - Brunswick Campus.
