Mason Schermerhorn Identified as Victim in Apalachee High School Shooting Meanwhile 14-Year-Old Colt Gray Charged with Murder of Two Students and Two Teachers, Including Autistic Student Mason Schermerhorn

Obituary for Mason Schermerhorn Mason Schermerhorn, a bright and beloved student at Apalachee High School, tragically passed away on September 3, 2024, at the age of 16, during a devastating shooting at his school. Mason was one of four victims, including two students and two teachers, in the tragic incident that shocked the Apalachee community. The suspect, a 14-year-old student named Colt Gray, has been charged with their murders.

Mason, born on January 22, 2008, was a kind-hearted and spirited young man. Diagnosed with autism at an early age, he faced challenges with determination and resilience, becoming a source of inspiration to his family, friends, and teachers. 

His unique perspective on life, coupled with his gentle nature and strong will, made him a beloved member of the Apalachee community. 

Mason had an insatiable curiosity about the world and was passionate about technology, art, and video games. His creative mind often shone through in his school projects, where he excelled in subjects like computer science and digital arts.

Mason’s family and teachers took great pride in his accomplishments, both academically and personally. He was deeply loved by his parents, siblings, and extended family, who 

admired his compassion and his ability to persevere through life’s obstacles. His infectious smile and gentle sense of humor brought light to all those who were lucky enough to know him.

The tragic loss of Mason has left the community in shock and mourning. His death, along with the other victims, underscores the heartbreaking reality of violence in schools and the need for continued efforts to ensure the safety of students. 

Colt Gray, the 14-year-old suspect in the shooting, has been charged with multiple counts of murder, and the incident has raised questions about mental health and school security.

Mason is survived by his parents, siblings, and a loving extended family who are struggling to come to terms with this senseless tragedy. 

A memorial service will be held in Mason’s honor on September 10, 2024, at Apalachee High School, where the community will come together to remember his life and celebrate the joy he brought to others.
