In a tragic incident on Friday morning, three people died in a fiery crash on northbound I-270. The victims, identified as 45-year-old Michelle Yaeger and her two young daughters, aged 7 and 10, were all in the same vehicle.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 8 a.m. when a truck hauling lumber pulled over onto the inside shoulder of the ramp from I-55 to I-270. The truck driver had stopped to address a possible issue with the security of his load. While the truck was stationary, it was struck from behind by an SUV driven by Michelle Yaeger.
Upon impact, the SUV quickly caught fire. The truck driver immediately jumped out and attempted to assist the passengers in the SUV, but the blaze spread rapidly. Emergency responders pronounced Michelle and her 7-year-old daughter dead at the scene. The 10-year-old daughter was rushed to the hospital but was later declared deceased.
The crash caused significant traffic disruption, closing I-270 for at least an hour. Local authorities, including a spokesperson named Thompson, noted that the area between I-55 and I-270 is a frequent site for accidents.
Friday's tragic accident was not an isolated event on the highways. On the opposite side of Highway 55, emergency crews were also responding to a serious accident involving an overturned tractor trailer and a pile-up of at least five cars.
In light of these incidents, emergency crews have urged drivers to exercise extra caution, especially with the increased traffic expected during the holiday season.
