Expressing profound sorrow, the consulate underscored its commitment to collaborating with local authorities to thoroughly investigate Arfath's untimely demise and to provide unwavering support to his grieving family. Mohammed Abdul Arfath's passing marks the second loss within a week and the 11th in a series of distressing incidents involving Indian students in 2024 alone.

The Consulate General of India in New York issued a statement, expressing deep distress over the discovery of Mr. Mohammed Abdul Arfath's lifeless body in Cleveland, Ohio. "Our heartfelt condolences go out to Mr. Mohammed Arfath's family.

@IndiainNewYork remains in constant communication with local agencies to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Mohammed Abdul Arfath's death. We are facilitating all possible assistance to transport his remains back to India," the statement conveyed.

Mohammed Abdul Arfath, originally from Nacharam, Hyderabad, ventured to the United States in May of the preceding year to pursue a Master's degree in Information Technology at Cleveland University.

The last communication Mohammed Abdul Arfath had was with his father on March 7th; thereafter, his mobile phone remained inactive. Arfath's roommates in the U.S. informed his father that they had filed a missing person report with the Cleveland Police Department.

On March 19, Mohammed Abdul Arfath's family received a distressing ransom call from an unidentified individual. The caller claimed that Arfath had been abducted by drug dealers who demanded a ransom of USD 1,200 for his release. Additionally, the caller issued a chilling threat, indicating the possibility of selling Mohammed Abdul Arfath's organs if the ransom wasn't met.

In the preceding month, the consulate had disclosed its collaboration with local law enforcement agencies to locate the missing Indian student. Regrettably, on April 9, the consulate confirmed the grim discovery of Arfath's lifeless body in Cleveland, United States.
