Charles Edge, an esteemed American computer scientist and author, sadly passed away on Friday, April 19, 2024. With a remarkable career spanning decades, Edge made significant contributions to the tech industry.
For 15 years, Edge served as the Chief Technology Officer of 318 Inc in Santa Monica, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the company's technological landscape. He then dedicated 5 years to Jamf Pro, showcasing his expertise in the field. At the time of his passing, he held the position of Chief Technology Officer at Bootstrappers and HandrailUX.
Edge was a prominent figure in the tech community, often sharing his insights and knowledge at various conferences, including Defcon, Blackhat, LinuxWorld, and MacSysAdmin. His expertise extended to open-source projects, where he contributed to initiatives like precache, swift-ldif-csv, and jssimporter. Additionally, he served on the board of directors of Tamarisk and the corporate council of the Guthrie Theater.
In 2007, Edge made headlines with his talk at Black Hat, where he discussed a vulnerability in Mac OS X FileVault. Although he was scheduled to present at Black Hat 2008, the talk was canceled due to potential violations of a non-disclosure agreement. Despite this setback, Edge's influence in the security realm continued to grow. He authored the SANS course on Mac OS X Security, establishing crucial security practices for Apple and IoT devices in large-scale environments.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Edge was deeply passionate about preserving the history of computing. In January 2020, he founded the Minnesota Computer History Museum, a non-profit organization dedicated to showcasing the evolution of technology and its impact on society.
