United Food and Commercial Workers President Kim Novak, a tireless advocate for social justice and the heart of the union, passed away on Monday, May 6th, 2024. Kim Novak’s journey into the realm of organized labor was sparked by her experience as a Safeway clerk, where she witnessed firsthand the struggles and aspirations of workers. Her dedication to fighting for what’s right for members was evident throughout her career.
Kim initially contemplated a career in law, but it was her summer job at UFCW 1518 that opened her eyes to the transformative power of organized labor. Graduating with a degree in history from the University of British Columbia in 2007, Kim dove into various roles within the union, including communication representative, union representative, director, and Secretary-Treasurer. Her dedication and commitment to the cause led to her unanimous election as President by the Executive Board in 2019.
Throughout her tenure, Kim Novak remained steadfast in her mission to effect positive change for UFCW members through education, engagement, and empowerment. Her vision extended beyond immediate workplace concerns to broader issues of human rights and equity.
Kim’s long-term goal was to strengthen member power within the workplace and position UFCW 1518 as a beacon of fairness and equality, advocating for the rights of each member individually.
Kim Novak's impact transcended national boundaries as she served as a UFCW International Vice-President for four years. She viewed leadership as a means to elevate others and uphold the dignity of all workers.
Her approach was rooted in the principles of solidarity and justice, striving to create a world where every worker could thrive. Kim's legacy will endure through the countless lives she touched and the enduring changes she championed.
