Tsunami Advisory in Effect – July 29, 2025 – British Columbia

Tsunami Advisory in Effect – July 29, 2025 – British Columbia A tsunami advisory has been issued for parts of coastal British Columbia following a powerful undersea earthquake that struck off the coast of southeastern Alaska in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 29, 2025. The 7.3 magnitude quake occurred at approximately 4:12 a.m. PDT and prompted the National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC) to issue alerts for coastal regions from Haida Gwaii to northern Vancouver Island.

Emergency Management BC (EMBC) has confirmed that while a tsunami warning has not been issued, strong currents and unusual tidal activity may impact coastal areas, particularly in narrow inlets, harbors, and beach zones. The advisory means that there is a potential for localized flooding and hazardous conditions in low-lying areas.

Residents in affected areas are being urged to stay away from the shoreline, beaches, and marinas until the advisory is lifted. Boaters are advised to remain at sea in deep water until it is deemed safe to return. Strong and unpredictable surges may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival, which is expected around 6:00 a.m. PDT.

The provincial government has activated emergency coordination centers, and local authorities are on high alert, monitoring the situation and prepared to implement evacuation measures if conditions worsen. As of now, there are no reports of damage or injuries in British Columbia.Officials emphasize that the tsunami advisory is precautionary but should be taken seriously.

The public is encouraged to monitor updates from official sources including Environment Canada, EMBC, and local emergency services. Cell phone alerts and emergency broadcasts are being issued in affected zones to keep residents informed.Further assessments will determine when the advisory can be lifted. For now, coastal communities are urged to remain vigilant and prioritize safety.
