The Austin Police Department is investigating a tragic murder-suicide that claimed the lives of two people Monday afternoon in East Austin. The incident, which unfolded in a residential neighborhood, marks the city’s 35th homicide of the year.

in the 2900 block of Springdale Road. Upon arrival, police discovered a man and woman inside a home suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel pronounced both individuals dead at the scene. Based on preliminary evidence and witness accounts, investigators believe the male victim fatally shot the woman before turning the weapon on himself.

The relationship between the two victims has not been publicly confirmed, though officials noted that they may have had a prior domestic relationship. Police are working to notify next of kin before releasing their identities. The motive behind the tragic event remains under investigation, and detectives are continuing to interview neighbors and examine surveillance footage from nearby residences.
