The attack occurred near O’Connell Street, a busy and heavily trafficked area, shortly after 7:00 p.m., 

sending shockwaves through the community and prompting a swift response from emergency services.According to Gardaí, the young man suddenly charged at the officer during what was believed to be a routine engagement. Without warning, he produced a knife and stabbed the Garda multiple times before being subdued by backup officers and passersby. 

The injured Garda, whose name has not yet been released, was rushed to Mater Hospital, where he remains in stable but serious condition.Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and panic, with commuters and tourists scrambling for safety as the suspect lunged at the officer. “It was absolutely terrifying,” said one witness. “You never expect something like that to happen in broad daylight in the middle of the city.”

The suspect, who is known to Gardaí, was taken into custody at the scene. Authorities have confirmed that he is being held at a central Garda station where he is undergoing questioning.
