PITTSTOWN, N.Y. — The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is mourning the tragic loss of one of its own following a devastating work zone crash in Rensselaer County. Robert Bornt, a respected Highway Maintenance Supervisor, died early Friday morning after sustaining catastrophic injuries during a flagging operation on Route 7 in Pittstown

PITTSTOWN, N.Y. — The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is grieving the heartbreaking loss of one of its dedicated employees after a tragic work zone crash early Friday morning in Rensselaer County. Robert Bornt, a seasoned Highway Maintenance Supervisor, was fatally injured while performing a flagging operation on Route 7 in Pittstown. 

According to authorities, Bornt was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic in an active construction zone. Despite the swift response of emergency crews, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.Bornt, who had worked with NYSDOT for more than two decades, was widely known among colleagues for his professionalism, leadership, and unwavering commitment to safety. 

He was overseeing a routine maintenance operation when the crash occurred — a stark reminder of the dangers transportation workers face every day on New York’s roads.“Our entire NYSDOT family is devastated,” said NYSDOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez. “Robert was a dedicated public servant who gave so much to his community. 

His loss is felt deeply, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and coworkers during this incredibly difficult time.”State police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Initial reports suggest the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. No charges have been filed as of Friday afternoon.

The incident has reignited calls for increased awareness and caution in work zones. NYSDOT officials are urging motorists to slow down and remain alert when traveling through construction areas.
