OAKLAND, Calif. – A community is in mourning following the tragic death of Dr. Marvin Lavelle Boomer, a respected educator and mentor at Castlemont High School, who was struck and killed during a police pursuit involving the California Highway Patrol (CHP) on Thursday

OAKLAND, Calif. –A deep sense of sorrow has settled over the Castlemont High School community following the tragic death of Dr. Marvin Lavelle Boomer, a cherished educator and mentor who was struck and killed during a California Highway Patrol (CHP) pursuit on Thursday.

Dr. Boomer, known for his unwavering dedication to student success and community empowerment, was walking near the school when a suspect vehicle fleeing from CHP officers lost control and struck him. Authorities reported that the pursuit began after the suspect failed to yield during a routine traffic stop. 

The chase escalated through East Oakland, ultimately leading to the fatal incident near 84th Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard.Colleagues and students are remembering Dr. Boomer as more than a teacher — he was a guiding force, especially for young men of color navigating life in a historically underserved community. 

With over two decades in education, Dr. Boomer had served as both a teacher and administrator, shaping countless lives with his leadership, compassion, and commitment to equity in education."He believed in every student who walked through our doors," said Principal Tasha Freeman. "

He mentored, inspired, and loved them like they were his own. His absence will be deeply felt by the entire Castlemont family."The Oakland Unified School District has extended condolences to Dr. Boomer's family and announced the availability of grief counselors on campus to support students and staff in the coming days.

Community members gathered Thursday night for a candlelight vigil in front of the school, laying flowers and sharing memories of a man who never gave up on his students or his city. As investigations continue into the pursuit and the suspect is held in custody, many are calling for a reevaluation of high-speed chase protocols in densely populated areas.Dr. Marvin Lavelle Boomer is survived by his wife, three children, and the generations of students he uplifted.
