Marvin Lavelle Boomer Obituary: Beloved Oakland Educator Tragically Killed in Police Pursuit Accident

Marvin Lavelle Boomer, a cherished educator and mentor at Castlemont High School in Oakland, tragically lost his life on Wednesday evening, May 28, 2025, after being struck by a suspect fleeing from California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers in a stolen vehicle. The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. at the intersection of East 21st Street and 12th Avenue, where the suspect, 18-year-old Eric Scott Hernandez-Garcia, lost control of the vehicle, hitting Boomer and another pedestrian. 

Boomer died at the scene, while the other pedestrian sustained injuries and was hospitalized in stable condition.Boomer was a dedicated math teacher and Pathways coach at Castlemont High School, known for his unwavering commitment to student success and his role as a mentor and friend within the school community. 

His sudden passing on the last day of school, just before graduation ceremonies, has left a profound impact on students, colleagues, and the broader Oakland community. Principal Joseph Blasher expressed deep condolences, highlighting Boomer's legacy as a source of strength and inspiration. 

The suspect, Hernandez-Garcia, had been involved in a prior felony evading incident and fled when CHP officers attempted a traffic stop. After a brief pursuit, which was discontinued by officers, Hernandez-Garcia continued to drive recklessly, resulting in multiple collisions, including the fatal crash that claimed Boomer's life. He was arrested and faces multiple felony charges, including vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run. 

Boomer's death has reignited discussions about police pursuit policies in Oakland, with officials and community members calling for a review of current practices to prevent future tragedies involving innocent bystanders.
