Asheville Academy Suicide, Authorities Investigate Student Death At Asheville Academy In Weaverville, North Carolina

In May 2025, Asheville Academy, a therapeutic boarding school for girls in Weaverville, North Carolina, faced intense scrutiny following two student suicides within the same month. The first incident occurred on May 3, involving a 13-year-old girl, and the second on May 29, involving a 12-year-old girl .These tragedies prompted investigations by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office

 

The NCDHHS ordered Asheville Academy to suspend all new admissions, citing violations that posed risks to the health and safety of clients .Asheville Academy is operated by Wilderness Training & Consulting, LLC, which also managed Trails Carolina, a wilderness therapy program shut down in 2024 after the death of a 12-year-old boy. 

Both facilities have faced legal challenges and allegations of inadequate care .Despite the suspension of new admissions, current students were allowed to remain at Asheville Academy. The NCDHHS continues to monitor the facility to ensure compliance with safety standards .
