Andrew Krakouer, Former AFL Player Died at 42 in Perth, AUS

Andrew James Krakouer, a former Australian rules footballer renowned for his time with the Richmond and Collingwood Football Clubs in the Australian Football League (AFL), passed away on March 30, 2025, at the age of 42 due to a suspected heart attack in Perth, Western Australia. 

Born on February 4, 1983, in Melbourne, Victoria, Andrew was the son of Jim Krakouer and nephew of Phil Krakouer, both celebrated AFL players. His cousin, Nathan Krakouer, also played in the AFL for Port Adelaide and the Gold Coast Suns. 

Andrew's football journey began with South Fremantle in the Western Australian Football League (WAFL), leading to his selection by Richmond with the 41st pick in the 2000 national draft.During his tenure at Richmond from 2001 to 2007, Krakouer played 102 games and scored 102 goals, establishing himself as a dynamic forward known for his agility and goal-scoring prowess. 

However, his career faced a significant setback in 2008 when he was convicted of assault and sentenced to four years in prison. Demonstrating resilience, Krakouer returned to football with Swan Districts in the WAFL upon his release, delivering an outstanding 2010 season. 

He secured the Sandover Medal for the league's best and fairest player and led Swan Districts to a premiership, earning the Simpson Medal as the best on ground in the grand final.Krakouer's remarkable comeback caught the attention of Collingwood, who signed him in 2011. 

That year, he played 23 games, kicked 35 goals, and received the AFL Mark of the Year award for a spectacular grab against Adelaide. Notably, he contributed three goals in Collingwood's grand final loss to Geelong. Despite a promising start, injuries, including a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in 2012, limited his impact, leading to his delisting at the end of the 2013 season. 

Off the field, Krakouer dedicated himself to mentoring young Indigenous players and working as a broadcaster, becoming a respected figure within the AFL community. His sudden passing has elicited heartfelt tributes from former teammates, coaches, and fans, who remember him not only for his exceptional talent but also for his perseverance and contributions beyond the game.
