A deadly domestic altercation erupted in Harrisburg on Monday when a man fatally shot Chartara Courtney in her neighborhood before engaging in a fatal shootout with deputies.

 On January 13, 2025, a tragic domestic incident unfolded in Harrisburg, North Carolina, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call from 43-year-old Chartara Laverta Courtney, who reported a personal dispute. Despite her request to cancel the dispatch, deputies proceeded to the Providence Manor subdivision to ensure her safety. 

Upon arrival, deputies witnessed 47-year-old Willie Lawrence Wimbley fatally shooting Courtney outside her residence. Wimbley then fired multiple rounds at the deputies, who returned fire. 

During the confrontation, Wimbley sustained a fatal gunshot wound, which preliminary investigations suggest was self-inflicted, though final confirmation is pending from the medical examiner's office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). 

Courtney and Wimbley were known to have been in a prior dating relationship. The incident has left the local community in shock, with neighbors recounting the harrowing experience of hearing gunfire and witnessing the heavy police presence. 

One neighbor described seeing officers with rifles and hearing commands for the suspect to surrender, while another recounted taking cover with her children during the gunfire. 

The deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave, adhering to standard protocol following officer-involved shootings. The SBI is conducting an independent investigation into the incident, and their findings will be forwarded to the District Attorney's Office for review.
