Ken Berkowitz Obituary, Death: Canton, MA, Former CPD Chief Has Sadly Passed Away

Kenneth N. Berkowitz, the esteemed former Chief of Police of Canton, Massachusetts, passed away on December 29, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated public service and community leadership. Born and raised in Needham, Massachusetts, Ken's commitment to law enforcement was evident early in his life. He fulfilled a lifelong dream by joining the Canton Police Department (CPD) as a patrol officer in 1992.

His dedication and leadership skills facilitated a swift rise through the ranks: he was promoted to sergeant in 1997, lieutenant in 1999, and, in 2005, became the town's 13th Chief of Police.

During his tenure as Chief, which lasted until his retirement in June 2022, Chief Berkowitz was instrumental in modernizing the department and fostering strong community relations. He emphasized proactive policing, community engagement, and transparency, earning the department widespread respect within the greater Boston police community.

Beyond his local duties, Chief Berkowitz was actively involved with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and served as president of the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council (MetroLEC), a consortium of 45 area police departments.

In this capacity, he coordinated critical responses, including the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 and the subsequent manhunt in Watertown.

Chief Berkowitz's commitment to professional development was evident through his extensive federal law enforcement training. He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico and the DEA’s Drug Unit Commander Academy, among other prestigious programs.

In his personal life, Ken was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife, Holly, and their children. His son, Benjamin, continues his father's legacy by serving as a full-time officer in the CPD's patrol division.

The Canton community deeply mourns the loss of Chief Berkowitz. His leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment to public service have left an indelible mark on the town and its residents. As the community reflects on his contributions, there is a collective sense of gratitude for the positive impact he made throughout his distinguished career.

A memorial service is being planned to honor Chief Berkowitz's life and legacy, with details to be announced by the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to local community organizations that were close to Ken's heart, ensuring that his spirit of service continues to benefit others.
