The Missoula, Montana community is mourning the loss of Brian Busby, a dedicated wildlife biologist and Boise State University alumnus, who passed away unexpectedly on December 27, 2024, at the age of 32.Born on June 15, 1992, in Syracuse, New York, Brian developed a passion for wildlife and conservation early in life.
He pursued this interest academically, earning a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
His commitment to avian research led him to travel extensively, studying and protecting bird species across various continents.Seeking to further his expertise, Brian enrolled in Boise State University's Master of Science in Raptor Biology program.
His thesis, titled "The Effects of Roads on Movement, Flight Dynamics, Occupancy, and Productivity in Barn Owls (Tyto alba)," provided valuable insights into the impact of human infrastructure on raptor behavior and ecology.
In recognition of his outstanding research, Brian received the William C. Andersen Memorial Award for Best Student Paper at the Annual Meeting of the Raptor Research Foundation in 2021.
After completing his master's degree in 2022, Brian joined the Raptor View Research Institute in Missoula as a biologist. In this role, he was instrumental in studying and protecting Golden Eagles along the Rocky Mountain Front.
His work involved capturing eagles during their fall migration, collecting vital data, and placing GPS transmitters to monitor their movements, particularly concerning wind farm interactions.
Brian's dedication to wildlife conservation was matched by his adventurous spirit. Colleagues recall his solo 28-mile hike into the Bitterroot Mountains to retrieve a downed transmitter, exemplifying his unwavering commitment to his work.
Beyond his professional achievements, Brian was known for his kindness, curiosity, and enthusiasm for the natural world. He inspired many through his work and personal interactions, leaving a lasting impact on both the scientific community and those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Brian is survived by his parents, David and Susan Busby, his sister, Emily, and his fiancée, Sarah Thompson. A memorial service to celebrate his life and contributions to wildlife conservation is planned for January 5, 2025, at the Raptor View Research Institute in Missoula.
