Serenity Birdsong Obituary, Death: Middle Tennessee State University Transgender Student Leader and Beloved MT Lambda Vice President, Serenity Birdsong, Passes Away Tragically in Campus Library

The Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Serenity Birdsong, a beloved student leader and Vice President of MT Lambda, who tragically passed away on October 27, 2024, in the campus library. Serenity, a proud transgender woman, was known for her unwavering commitment to advocacy and her dedication to fostering 

inclusivity and acceptance within the MTSU community. Her sudden passing has left a profound void in the lives of friends, family, and peers who admired her strength, warmth, and compassionate spirit.

Serenity’s journey at MTSU was marked by her relentless pursuit of equality and representation for the LGBTQ+ community. As Vice President of MT Lambda, MTSU’s LGBTQ+ student organization, she played an 

instrumental role in championing initiatives that promoted a welcoming environment for all students. Her leadership was characterized by empathy, resilience, and an ability to inspire others to embrace their authentic selves. 

Serenity was often a voice for those who felt unheard, using her platform to advocate for mental health awareness, LGBTQ+ rights, and the importance of safe spaces on campus.

Beyond her advocacy work, Serenity was beloved for her kindness and ability to uplift others. Friends and classmates remember her as a gentle soul with an infectious smile and an encouraging word for everyone she met. She was deeply committed to supporting her peers, offering mentorship and understanding to those facing challenges.

Following her death, a GoFundMe campaign was organized to help Serenity’s family with funeral expenses and to honor her memory. The outpouring of support reflects the tremendous impact she made on those around her. 

MTSU has also arranged for counseling and support services for students and staff affected by her loss, with faculty and friends organizing a memorial to celebrate her life and legacy.

Serenity’s memory will forever inspire the MTSU community to strive for acceptance, compassion, and inclusivity. Her legacy endures as a beacon of hope and love, and her impact will continue to resonate in the lives of those she touched.
