Wayne Graham Obituary: Wayne Graham, Esteemed Rice University Baseball Coach and 2003 College World Series Champion, Passes Away at 88

Wayne Graham, the legendary Rice University baseball coach who led the Owls to a College World Series championship in 2003, has passed away at the age of 88. His death marks the end of an era for college baseball, as he was one of the sport's most respected and successful coaches. Graham's influence extended far beyond the diamond, leaving an indelible mark on the players he mentored and the game he loved.

Born in Yoakum, Texas, Wayne Graham's journey in baseball began as a player, where he demonstrated early on the dedication and talent that would later define his coaching career. 

After a brief professional career that included stints in the minor leagues and a short time with the Philadelphia Phillies, Graham transitioned into coaching, where he found his true calling.

Graham’s coaching career took off at San Jacinto College, where he turned the program into a powerhouse, winning five NJCAA national championships. His success there caught the attention of Rice University, where he was hired as head coach in 1992. 

Over the next 27 years, Graham transformed Rice into a national contender, leading the team to 23 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, seven College World Series appearances, and the crowning achievement, a national championship in 2003.
