A tragic incident occurred early Sunday during a post-prom house party, resulting in the death of a 17-year-old senior from La Quinta High School. Hours later, two teenagers from Coachella Valley were arrested in connection with the shooting.
The victim, identified as Jaden Ramos by the Desert Sands Unified School District on Monday, was a senior at La Quinta High School. Principal Gregg O’Mara expressed the community's sorrow, stating, “This is a tragedy for the community, our school, and for our senior class.” He also mentioned that the Desert Sands Unified School District Crisis Team is available to support any student, staff member, or family member in need.
The shooting occurred around 2:36 a.m. on Sunday in the 79000 block of Paseo Del Rey in La Quinta. Riverside County sheriff's deputies, responding to a report of the incident, were informed that a 17-year-old male with a gunshot wound had been brought to a local hospital. Unfortunately, he was later pronounced dead.
Homicide investigators quickly identified two suspects following the shooting. Elijah Alfredo Martinez, 18, of Bermuda Dunes, and Dominick Cruz Venecia, 18, of Coachella, were arrested and booked into the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio on suspicion of murder. According to jail records, both are being held on a $1 million bail.
Cruz and Venecia are scheduled to make their initial court appearances on Wednesday at the Larson Justice Center in Indio, as per Riverside County records.
