A tragic accident occurred in northwest Calgary on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in the death of a teenager after being struck by a train. The incident took place around 1:20 p.m. near the train tracks east of the 85th Street bridge in the Bowness area.
Calgary police reported that the teen, initially taken to the hospital in life-threatening condition, succumbed to their injuries. According to witnesses, three teenagers were on the first of two bridges over the Bow River, a popular swimming spot. While two of the teens managed to escape in time, the third—believed to be a 17-year-old boy—was hit by an incoming CPKC train. The impact of the collision threw him approximately 50 meters.
Despite the train tracks being fenced off, it is common for people to cut or create holes in the fence to access the bridge. This hazardous behavior has once again resulted in a fatal incident.
The Calgary Board of Education has confirmed that the victim was a student at Bowness High School. The timing of this tragedy is particularly poignant as the school’s graduation ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday. However, the board has announced that the graduation will proceed as planned. Classes will resume on Thursday, with counseling and support services available for students affected by the incident.
The school has reached out to the families of other students who witnessed the event, offering support during this difficult time. The Calgary police are conducting an investigation into the accident. They urge anyone with information to contact them at 403-266-1234.
