On April 13, 2024, tragedy struck at a block party near the intersection of Williams Avenue and Martin Luther King Street in Wynne, resulting in the death of one man and injuries to at least nine others. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. and involved gunfire, with two individuals also being struck by vehicles at the scene.
The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division has taken charge of the investigation at the request of the Wynne Police Department. They have already identified several persons of interest and urge anyone with information to contact Troop D at (870) 970-6082.
The victim, Varian Campbell, aged 27 and a resident of Wynne, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The injured individuals, both male and female, ranged in age from 24 to 49 years old.
Emergency services transported the victims to various medical facilities, including St. Bernards CrossRidge Community Hospital in Wynne, Forrest City Medical Center, and hospitals in Memphis, Tennessee, and Jonesboro. One critically injured victim was airlifted to the Regional One Health Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis. Authorities suspect that additional injured individuals may have sought medical attention at hospitals using private vehicles.
The deceased has been transferred to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory for further examination to determine the cause and manner of death. As the investigation continues, authorities are diligently working to piece together the events leading to this tragic incident.
