Sean Berenholtz Pikesville MD Obituary : Dr. Sean M. Berenholtz, MD Death - Johns Hopkins Medicine Professor Has Died

Johns Hopkins Medicine Professor Dr. Sean M. Berenholtz, MD has sadly passed away. He died on Tuesday 16th April 2024 at the age of 57. He held the distinguished position of Professor at the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, with a concurrent appointment in the Departments of Surgery and Health Policy Management at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. 

His academic journey began with a business degree from Towson State University, followed by the attainment of his M.D. from the Medical College of Virginia. He commenced his medical career with an internship at LDS Hospital in Utah in 1996, subsequently undertaking residency training before ascending to become an ACCM Fellow at Johns Hopkins in 2000. 

Further enriching his academic credentials, Dr. Berenholtz earned a master's degree in Clinical Investigation from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in 2003. Acknowledged for his excellence, he was elevated to the esteemed rank of Professor in 2014, recognized universally for his prowess as a clinician, educator, and researcher.

Throughout his tenure, Dr. Berenholtz displayed unwavering dedication to Johns Hopkins University, assuming pivotal leadership roles including Medical Director of Perioperative Safety within our Department, Director of Inpatient Quality and Safety at the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality, and membership on the Executive Committee for the Armstrong Institute.

Contributing significantly to the advancement of science, Dr. Berenholtz pioneered innovative approaches in implementation and quality improvement. His contributions include the development of pragmatic tools to engage clinicians and frontline staff, formulation of conceptual models aimed at enhancing care delivery, and the advancement of implementation science. 

He is survived by his devoted wife, Ana Goldseker; his loving daughter, Madeline Goldseker Berenholtz; his beloved furbaby, Bella, his father, Jerome Berenholtz (partner Sandy Gordon) and his cousins, Constance Hare (Gary Greenblatt), Jason (Stacey) Taule, and Jessica (Matthew) Cooper. He was predeceased by his cherished mother, Leatha "Lee" Berenholtz (nee Carter) and his grandmother, Connie Carter.

Services at Sol Levinson's Chapel, 8900 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, MD 21208, on Thursday, April 18th, 2024, at 1:00 pm. Please omit flowers. Contributions in his memory may be sent to the Pikesville Volunteer Fire Department, 40 Sudbrook Lane, Pikesville, MD 21208. The family will be in mourning at 20 Windflower Court, Reisterstown, MD 21136 immediately following service until 5:00 PM, and continuing at 7:00 PM with a service at 7:30 PM. They will continue on Friday beginning at 2:00 PM with a service at 2:30 PM.
