A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday morning when a 16-year-old Southeast High School student, identified as Keyon Day, succumbed to a gunshot wound to his lower torso. The shooting occurred around 8:40 a.m. in the 2300 block of Taylor Avenue, near Dreamland Park.
Rachel Dyas, a spokeswoman from District 186, confirmed that the victim was a student at Southeast High School, though his name has not been released as of Wednesday afternoon.
Deputy Chief Sara Pickford reported that ShotSpotter detected the gunshot, and Springfield Police received a call about the incident. Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell confirmed that a deputy was nearby and responded promptly to the scene. The deputy provided immediate first aid to the victim before first responders arrived.
The victim was rushed by ambulance to HSHS St. John’s Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Despite efforts to save him, he tragically did not survive.
