The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office joined forces with the Kansas Highway Patrol to investigate a tragic crash that occurred on northbound Interstate 35 near Edgerton Road.
According to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, the collision took place around 3:15 a.m. on a Sunday morning. The incident involved a Jeep Gladiator traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-35 and a Freightliner tractor traveling north on the same interstate.
The collision was severe, with the Jeep striking the semi head-on. The driver of the Jeep sustained suspected serious injuries and was rushed to an area hospital for treatment.
Tragically, the second occupant of the Jeep, identified as 22-year-old Eric Diaz from Melbourne, Florida, was killed in the collision. Fortunately, the driver of the semi truck did not sustain any apparent injuries.
Alongside the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol, emergency crews from Johnson County MED-ACT also responded to the scene to provide assistance.
Due to the severity of the crash, the stretch of road had to be closed for several hours, causing significant traffic disruption. However, by around 12:45 p.m., authorities were able to reopen the road to traffic.
