Christie’s launches inaugural Ordinal Maxi Biz auction

Renowned auction house Christie’s is making a significant move by embracing Bitcoin Ordinals. In an announcement made today (April 9), Christie’s unveiled its "Ordinal Maxi Biz (OMB)" sale, featuring one of the most successful projects within the Ordinals ecosystem.

Running from April 9 to April 16 on christies.com, the auction comprises four lots carefully curated by OMB founder ZK Shark. The selection includes artworks by Tony Tafuro and berkin bags, with contributions from developer Nullish. Notably, all items up for sale are primary market pieces sourced directly from the creators.

Originating in 2023 from the collaboration between ZK Shark and Tafuro, Ordinals Maxi Biz (OMB) boasts a collection of 5,141 unique hand-drawn illustrations inscribed on the Bitcoin blockchain. These inscriptions are distinguished by eye-color rarity traits derived from on-chain provenance, such as the specific blocks or satoshis on which they were inscribed.

Although the collection currently carries a floor price of 0.486 BTC ($33,418), the rarest OMBs have fetched prices as high as 3.46 BTC. Such is the fervor surrounding the project that some enthusiasts have even controversially burned CryptoPunks to secure coveted spots on the allowlist.

Nicole Sales Giles, director of digital art sales at Christie’s, emphasizes the significance of Ordinals in today's web3 and digital art culture. She expresses delight in collaborating with ZK on this groundbreaking project and delving into OMB and the intriguing developments unfolding within the Bitcoin ecosystem.

ZK Shark underscores the revolutionary nature of Ordinal theory and inscriptions, which have enabled Bitcoin to function as a permissionless and immutable medium for fine digital artifacts. He highlights the capacity of inscriptions to preserve uncensored history and cultural expressions akin to humanity's earliest cave paintings.

Christie’s involvement further cements Bitcoin's status as the leading cryptocurrency and the premier destination for fine digital artifacts and documentation. Each auction lot starts with a bid of $100 and accepts both USD and BTC. Interested bidders can participate via Christie’s website.
