Elizabeth Zumbrum: Matthew James Ruth Identified as Suspect in Deadly York County Shooting That Killed Three Officers

Authorities have identified 24-year-old Matthew James Ruth as the suspect responsible for the deadly York County shooting that left three officers dead and two more critically wounded. The tragedy unfolded on September 17, 2025, when law enforcement attempted to serve a warrant at a property in North Codorus Township following reports of Ruth stalking his ex-girlfriend.

According to investigators, Ruth had been linked to disturbing incidents earlier in the month, including the suspected arson of a pickup truck belonging to his ex-girlfriend. Days later, she reported seeing him armed and lurking near her home, which prompted police to act swiftly. When officers arrived to serve the warrant, they entered the house unaware that Ruth, dressed in camouflage, was lying in wait in a nearby cornfield. He opened fire with an AR-15 style rifle, launching a sudden and brutal ambush.

Three detectives—Sgt. Cody Becker, Detective Isaiah Emenheiser, and Detective Mark Baker—were fatally struck in the barrage of gunfire. Two additional officers sustained critical injuries before fellow law enforcement returned fire, killing Ruth at the scene. The violence has devastated York County, with residents and officials struggling to come to terms with the loss of three dedicated public servants. Vigils and memorials are being planned to honor the fallen detectives, while prayers and support pour in for the wounded officers and their families.

Authorities are continuing to investigate Ruth’s actions leading up to the ambush, reviewing his history of harassment, access to firearms, and the escalating warning signs that culminated in the deadly attack. For the community, the tragedy underscores the dangers faced daily by law enforcement officers and the fragility of life in moments of sudden violence. Deepest condolences are extended to the families and colleagues of the fallen heroes.
