12-Year-Old Sophia Forchas Among Victims of Minneapolis Church Shooting

The Minneapolis community is reeling after the devastating church shooting that claimed the life of 12-year-old Sophia Forchas, one of two children killed during the attack at Annunciation Catholic School and Church. Authorities confirmed that Sophia was attending Mass with her classmates when gunfire erupted through the church’s windows, sending parishioners into panic and leaving dozens injured.

Sophia’s family, friends, and teachers describe her as a bright, compassionate girl with a contagious smile and a love for art and music. She was deeply involved in school activities and was known for encouraging her peers, often uplifting those who felt left out. Her death has left classmates heartbroken, with grief counselors now working with students and staff to process the trauma of losing a young life in such a violent way.

The shooting, carried out by 23-year-old gunman Robin Westman, left two children dead and 17 others wounded, including both children and elderly parishioners. Witnesses recalled the chaos as worshippers ducked for cover, while some rushed to shield younger students from the spray of bullets.

Emergency crews transported Sophia and other critically injured victims to area hospitals, but her injuries were too severe.Community members have since gathered for vigils, placing candles, flowers, and handwritten notes outside Annunciation Church in Sophia’s memory. Religious leaders and city officials have spoken of her death as a painful reminder of the innocence lost to senseless violence.

Authorities continue to investigate the shooting and review Westman’s disturbing manifesto, but for Sophia’s loved ones, the focus remains on remembering her light. Her family has asked that she be remembered not as a victim of tragedy but as a child who brought joy to everyone around her. The community now mourns the loss of a promising young life taken far too soon.
